Architect and author Sara Susanka's best-selling book about "The Not So Big House" which she designed and built in Minnesota. I purchased a license from Sara and rebuilt "The Not So Big House" in Larkspur, Colorado. The home has 2,800 finished square feet. It's not so big but this certainly didn't mean it was inexpensive to build, on the contrary! Sara has a whole series of books continuing with this theme. Instead of wood siding, I built the home with cement-fiber siding, cement-fiber shingles, and stone.
The foundation in progress -- note the black water shield applied to all concrete surfaces which will come into contact with the earth, plus the French drains at the bottom of the entire perimeter. The home under construction. I did a custom wood garage door with trim to match the design of the stained-glass entry door and sidelights. Note the wide six foot overhangs around the sides of the house -- an expensive enhancement! The living room and large picture window looking out at a meadow and trees. The dropped soffits or "runways" with hidden up-lighting are one of Sara's finest ideas. I think part of her inspiration came from Frank Lloyd Wright. The living room, eating nook, and entry to the kitchen, with maple floors and many architectural details. The fireplace surround is concrete and I faux painted it to look like marble.
The master bath with whirlpool, vanities, and a shower room (not pictured) I did in travertine marble, with fixtures from Restoration Hardware. And a unusual triangle-shaped window. The fireplace and built-in book cases which follow the stairs up. The painting covers wiring for a flat-screen TV. Kitchen detail with the same travertine marble, maple cabinets, corian counters, a dual-fuel convection range oven, and a stainless rangehood that was tricky to install. A broader view of the kitchen and the overhead runway; the kitchen island cabinet and one wall cabinet are cherry and intentionally different. When I first read "The Not So Big House" I wondered whether this idea would work. It does!
